Beginning at the end of the blade of the hockey stick, they tinker, in the blade years they commit themselves to learning more and becoming more experienced, then there\u2019s a growth inflection point where they are recognized for their skills and finally the end of the hockey stick where they\u2019re the ones in control. We\u2019ve included snippets with inspiring mothers over 50 who shared the Wake Up, Shake Up moments of their lives with us &#8211; and now with you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of Mother\u2019s Day&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1905, American Anna Jarvis began lobbying for Mother\u2019s Day following the death of her mother,&nbsp; a peace activist. Six years later, Mother\u2019s Day became a holiday observed in all 48 U.S. states. Fast forward to today, and Mother\u2019s Day is celebrated in nearly 60 countries worldwide. Switzerland and the United States both observe Mother\u2019s Day on the 2nd Sunday in May, often marking the day with flowers or brunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While honoring mothers on this one \u201cofficial\u201d day results in many breakfasts-in-bed and much pampering, we at Wake-Up, Shake-Up, Thrive! wish to take a deeper dive into the ways in which we can support and honor mothers \u2013 all year long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So much of the emotional and cognitive labor of daily life is placed on women. <\/strong>In addition to traditional \u201cwork\u201d in the workplace, let\u2019s not ignore the reality of a mother\u2019s unpaid work that might include shopping for the home, maintaining and cleaning it, planning activities, scheduling appointments, managing children, and taking care of immediate and extended family members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#ce9c00\"><strong>In her interview, Christiane &#8211; a seasoned 30 year C-Suite Executive and mother of two &#8211; explored the idea of how you can only begin to thrive by applying the oxygen mask metaphor: You are of no help to anyone, unless you first meet your own needs. \u201cMaking sure I put my own oxygen mask on first is not because I\u2019m egotistic, it\u2019s because I can\u2019t give unless I have some energy left in the tank,\u201d says Christiane. We completely agree!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Many 50+ Moms Are Currently Working?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, the U.S. labor participation rate for women 45-54 was 75%, 59% for women 55-64 and 22% for women 65-74 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Comparable research in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfs.admin.ch\/bfs\/en\/home\/statistics\/work-income\/employment-working-hours\/economically-active-population\/labour-market-participation-rate.assetdetail.22687497.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swiss Labour Force Survey<\/a> for 2021 showed 82% of women were still working at the age of 57 and by age 63, 52% of women were still working.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So once their children grow-up, what changes?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adult children no longer require the same supervision and level of care, but this does not necessarily mean that mothers ages 50+ have more flexibility and adaptability. Given today\u2019s aging demographic, older women are also often faced with aging parents replacing child-care with elder-care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">50+ women also face hurdles at work, including ageism, sexism, underrepresentation in leadership, and often daunting menopause symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the hurdles we cleared in our 20s 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s become insurmountable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#ce9c00\"><em><strong>We had an incredible conversation with interviewee Fran &#8211; A Real Estate Property Manager and mother of two &#8211; who at age 45, had what she called a \u201cworkaholic addiction breakdown.\u201d Fran took a personal inventory and blew the whistle on herself and realized that, although she had a vision for her life, she was serving everyone else but herself. Her health, career, and marriage suffered and only by unraveling addictive patterns and adopting new choices could she discover her gifts as an entrepreneur who coached others.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ageism and Sexism for Women over 50+&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Ageism-and-Sexism-for-Women-over-50.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-914\" width=\"675\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Ageism-and-Sexism-for-Women-over-50.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Ageism-and-Sexism-for-Women-over-50-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Ageism-and-Sexism-for-Women-over-50-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Ageism-and-Sexism-for-Women-over-50-18x10.webp 18w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Ageism-and-Sexism-for-Women-over-50-600x337.webp 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many women feel they are either being pushed aside or pushed out. The thought of looking for another job and competing with people half their age can dissuade them from jumping back into the applicant pool. But if they need a flexible work schedule or want to take on more interesting work, they may decide to take the leap. One thing is for sure, <strong>the same old 9to5, approach to working isn\u2019t working at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women are demanding more from work, and following the recent COVID pandemic, they\u2019re leaving their companies in unprecedented numbers to get it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Leanin.org and Mckinsey and Co. &#8216;s 2022 survey, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women in the Workplace<\/a>,\u201d reporting on responses from more than 40,000 employees &#8211; including in depth interviews: <strong>It\u2019s not a great resignation. It\u2019s a breakup.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Reasons women gave for leaving their positions included:&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Belittling microaggressions, i.e. having their judgment questioned or being mistaken for someone more junior.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spending time on employee support and well-being initiatives, spreading them thin and going mostly unrewarded.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s increasingly important for women leaders to work for companies that prioritize flexibility, employee well-being, and DEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can employers do about Ageism and Sexism?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Ageism-and-Sexism.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-915\" width=\"675\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Ageism-and-Sexism.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Ageism-and-Sexism-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Ageism-and-Sexism-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Ageism-and-Sexism-18x10.webp 18w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Ageism-and-Sexism-600x337.webp 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Create an environment where microaggressions are not tolerated.<\/strong> This is another area where leadership must lead by example.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Reward well done work, even when it is not revenue-generating. <\/strong>Look for ways in which the work completed contributes to the health, well-being, and vibrancy of your organization. For the benefits of doing so, see our recent blog post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/fr\/an-aging-workforce-that-soars-not-resigns\/\">prioritizing your aging workforce<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Consider a wide range of options for workplace flexibility and employee well-being.<\/strong> If you require employees to be in the office two days a week, why not provide a longer lunch or provide lunch in the office?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Reflect deeply: How are you actually walking the talk on employee well-being and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#ce9c00\"><strong>Christiane shared a wealth of knowledge around flexibility, including allowing sabbaticals, job sharing, projecting work accurately, and employing consultants in addition to employees. These techniques help women over 50 contribute their knowledge and skills in a way that works better for all. According to Christiane, if employers continue to hire people between 25-35 because doing so is less expensive, they\u2019ll be missing out on valuable and experienced employees over 50.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Women are STILL underrepresented in Leadership Roles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the McKinsey survey, for every 100 men who are promoted from entry-level roles to manager positions, only 87 women are promoted, and only 82 women of color are promoted. As a result, men significantly outnumber women at the manager level, and women can never or rarely catch up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">But women over 50 have significant skills to offer. When we spoke with Lisa Sicre, former executive and now business owner and mother of two, concerning entrepreneurship in your 50\u2019s <em><strong>Lisa shared the importance of taking what you learned from your previous work experience into the next phase of work \u2013 a point of leverage for leaders, too. \u201cYou have the tools you didn\u2019t have at 25, like self-confidence, self building.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can employers do about underrepresentation?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete regular SWOT analyses, and bring in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/fr\/groups\/\">third party<\/a> to identify leadership gaps that negatively impact the business.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look to promote from <em>within<\/em> your employee base first.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Caretaking Responsibilities for Elderly Relatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the U.S., caretaking responsibilities for elderly parents and in-laws fall on 50+ women. Without private employer or government support, this reality will continue to affect the amount of time women can spend working. The situation is slightly better in the UK and EU countries but caretaking tasks are most often borne by women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can employers do about Caretaking Responsibilities?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Consider a results-oriented workplace where as long as the work gets done, it\u2019s not so important <em>when<\/em> it gets done. <\/strong>Offer part-time, remote work, or compressed workweek schedules and flexible start and end times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Model work-life balance for your employees. <\/strong>If management is never taking time for caretaking duties, sick time, and children\u2019s activities, the consensus is neither should employees. Lead by example, not just what you may have in your employee handbook. Leaders without children can still model this type of balanced behavior and focus on well-being.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Menopause at Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menopause can begin as early as age 45, with symptoms persisting into the early60\u2019s. This is often the time in a woman\u2019s career when she has the most responsibility and associated pressures.According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/patient.info\/news-and-features\/how-menopause-can-affect-you-at-work#:~:text=Experiencing%20menopausal%20symptoms%20can%20have%20a%20significant%20impact,to%20mood%20and%20problems%20such%20as%20brain%20fog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> of more than 1,000 people, six out of ten working women between the ages of 45 and 55 said menopause had a negative impact on them at work. 7 in 10 said they were less able to concentrate, while close to 6 in 10 said they felt more <a href=\"https:\/\/patient.info\/news-and-features\/can-exercise-help-you-feel-less-stressed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stressed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many women are reluctant to talk about menopause at work, which is no surprise given the stigma of talking about \u201cwomen\u2019s issues\u201d in a professional setting, most often led by men.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can employers do about Menopause?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Menopause.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-916\" width=\"675\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Menopause.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Menopause-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Menopause-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Menopause-18x10.webp 18w, https:\/\/www.wakeupshakeupthrive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/What-can-employers-do-about-Menopause-600x337.webp 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3056703\/how-menopause-silently-affects-27-million-women-at-work-every-day#:~:text=An%20average%20of%2027%20million%20women%20between%20the,31%20million%20employed%20women%20will%20experience%20menopausal%20symptoms.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> by Ann Leohr for Forbes, she suggests the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Educate management and employees. How much does the average male know about the physical and mental symptoms of menopause?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Appoint an employee spokesperson to be the liaison to management so employees don\u2019t have to speak one-on-one with management.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Offer flexible options such as allowing the work day to begin later, work-from-home options and <em>not delineating between sick leave and personal time off.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Ensure benefit programs include treatments like acupuncture, Chinese medicine, bioidentical hormone replacement, and anything else that helps alleviate menopause symptoms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#ce9c00\"><strong>When we spoke with recently retired pharmacist Anne Hays, she shared that \u201cThe employee needs to be valued and shown they are valued and appreciated.
