In Wake-Up, Shake-Up, Thrive!, we introduced Green Thumbs as a symbol of ecological concern and individual vitality. Our message remains clear: sustainability is not only at the core of saving the planet, but at the heart of optimal ageing.

Today, this is more than a metaphor. From the food we eat and the air we breathe to the choices we make in how we work and move, our health and the Earth’s health are interconnected. The World Health Organization confirms that healthy environments could prevent nearly one quarter of the global disease burden. As longevity rises, so must our commitment to living in ways that preserve both the planet and our well-being.

SHAKE-UP!

Let’s talk about sustainability, where we live most of our lives: at work. While companies increasingly commit to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, one overlooked area is the sustainability of their people — especially those over 50.

We argue that age inclusivity is sustainability. Organizations that invest in the long-term well-being of their older workforce are investing in wisdom, continuity, and resilience. It’s not just ethical — it’s economically smart. Studies from the OECD show that age-diverse teams improve performance, and retaining older employees reduces turnover, knowledge loss, and recruitment costs.

The 50+ workforce is also more likely to engage in purpose-driven work and to prioritize sustainable practices, both personally and professionally. Ignoring this demographic is a missed opportunity — not just for DEI, but for ecological [DB1] and responsible leadership.

And yes, on a personal level, daily choices matter too. Eating more plants, moving your body, supporting local economies, and sleeping in eco-conscious environments all contribute to a longer, stronger life. For example, organic produce has been shown to contain 20–40% more antioxidants, a key contributor to healthy ageing.

THRIVE!

Imagine a future where thriving after 50 means growing greener — in habits, values, and contributions. Where businesses create environments that sustain not just profits, but people of all generations. Where ageing becomes a model for sustainable living.

If sustainability is our legacy, then ageing well is how we model it.

This summer, we encourage you to tend to your own garden — figuratively and literally. Plant a new habit. Compost an outdated mindset. Water your well-being.

SUMMER IS A PERFECT TIME TO RECHARGE — AND REFLECT.

Whether you’re soaking up the sun or taking a moment to slow down, it’s also a great time to read (or re-read) our book Wake-Up, Shake-Up, Thrive! — now available in both print and Kindle on Amazon, and newly released on Audible for easy, sustainable listening on the go.

And if you’re a leader, manager, or HR professional looking to build a more sustainable, age-inclusive organization, don’t miss our free resource: Download The Future-Proof Employer’s Guide to a 50+ Workforce (En/Fr) — a practical roadmap to retaining, empowering, and leveraging the wisdom of your multigenerational team.

Let this summer be your season of regeneration — for yourself and your workplace.

SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER!

This is our final issue before the summer break. We’ll be back in the fall with new themes and fresh tools to disrupt, delight, and deepen the experience of aging.

Your Green Thumb is your legacy tool.
